Flood Safety

Do you live in a flood prone area? Did you know that 1.3 million Australian homes are at risk of flooding?  Floods can be slow to develop giving you plenty of warning or you could be hit with flash flooding that causes unexpected damage and potential for loss of life.  Be flood ready by knowing your flood risk and getting prepared.

How do I prepare for flooding?
♦   Find out if you live in a flood prone area. This information can be obtained by contacting your local council or SES unit.
If you live in a flood prone area, find out how severely affected your property may be affected by flooding. I.e. maximum flood heights.
Develop a flood plan.  Decide where you will go in a flood and the safest route to get there. I.e. local evacuation centre, family or friends.
Store dangerous chemicals on high shelving to avoid contamination during flooding.
Check that your Emergency Kit is fully stocked including storm candles, matches and portable radio.
Check that your Home Evacuation Kit is ready to grab if you need to leave your home quickly.  Don’t forget important documents and medications.
Prepare an inventory of your household items.  Remember to take photographs and record make, model and serial number (if applicable). You may need these details for insurance claims.
Check to see if your insurance policy provides flood cover.  If not, investigate this option with your current insurer.
Be aware that you can still be isolated by flood waters, even if your property is not inundated.

What should I do if a flood warning is issued?
Listen to your local radio station or check television and internet reports for information and advice.
Re-check your Evacuation Kit including important documents and medications.
Prepare the car with essential items including your Evacuation Kit, fuel, food and water bottles.
Move possessions to a safe place including ceiling voids, benches, tables, etc.
Secure any objects that may float away.
Place a sandbag in your toilet to prevent sewerage from back-flowing into your home.
Turn off gas and electricity.
Contact your neighbours and confirm that they are aware of the flood warning.
Advise family and/or friends of your intentions.
Keep a charged mobile phone with you at all times.
Secure animals and pets on high ground and/or take with you if evacuating.
If you plan to evacuate, leave early. If you get stuck, stay where you are and call 000.
Never walk or drive through flood waters.
Beware of flood hazards such as snakes, live electricity and sewerage.
