Earthquake Safety
| Earthquakes may be rare in Australia but they do occur. Did you know that Australia has suffered 17 earthquakes over 6.0 on the Richter Scale in the past 80 years? Whilst the risk may still be low compared to our neighbours, it pays to know what to do if an earthquake strikes. | ![]() |

| How do I prepare for an earthquake? | ||
| ♦ | Plan where you and your family will meet following an earthquake. | |
| ♦ | Check that your insurance covers earthquake damage. | |
| ♦ | Make sure beds and chairs are clear of hanging items such as ceiling fans, pot plants, paintings, etc. | |
| ♦ | Brace freestanding furniture, such as bookshelves and cabinets. | |
| ♦ | Store flammable items in closed cupboards on the bottom shelf. Secure doors with sturdy latches. | |
| ♦ | Organise for a plumber to install flexible fittings on your gas and water pipes to prevent these pipes from rupturing. | |
| ♦ | Check that your Evacuation Kit is ready to grab if you need to leave your home quickly. |
|
| How do I survive an earthquake? | |
| ♦ | Take cover under the nearest sturdy object such as a table. |
| ♦ | Keep clear of windows, chimneys and overhead fittings. |
| ♦ | In high-risk buildings, stay clear of windows and outer walls. |
| ♦ | Shut off gas and electricity to any equipment being used. |
| ♦ | Put out small fires with a fire extinguisher or fire blanket. |
| ♦ | If outside, keep well clear of buildings, overhead structures, walls, bridges, power lines and trees. |
| What do I do after the earthquake? | |
| ♦ | Watch for hazards. |
| ♦ | Check for injuries. Apply first-aid. Do not move the seriously injured unless in immediate danger. |
| ♦ | Check for broken water, sewerage or electrical mains and stay clear if there is danger. |
| ♦ | Do not use your telephone (to avoid congestion) unless you need help for an emergency. |
| ♦ | Expect aftershocks. Evacuate if the building is damaged. |
| ♦ | Listen to the local radio and heed warnings or advice on damage, service disruptions and evacuation. |
| ♦ | Do not waste food or water. |
| ♦ | Avoid driving unless for an emergency. |
| ♦ | Do not go sight-seeing or enter damaged buildings. |
| ♦ | Stay calm and help others if possible. |
